Ethiopian True Cross

Meskel, celebrated annually on September 27 (or 28 in leap years), is one of Ethiopia’s most important religious festivals.

It commemorates Saint Helena’s 4th-century discovery of the True Cross, on which Jesus was crucified. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church marks the day with processions, prayers, and the lighting of the Demera, a large bonfire symbolizing the cross.

Priests in colorful robes carry crosses and chant hymns as crowds gather in Meskel Square in Addis Ababa and towns across the country.

The bonfire’s collapse is believed to predict future events.

Beyond its spiritual significance, Meskel is a time for joy, community, and feasting. Families gather to share traditional foods and celebrate together. Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, the festival remains a cherished Ethiopian tradition, blending devotion, culture, and vibrant communal celebration.
